A few months ago I had the opportunity to witness Van Jones present a reality of America’s affairs in such an elementary fashion during the live streaming of the American Dream Movement.  The musical group, The Roots performed at this Rebuild the Dream event so I got a chance to dance a little in between Van’s presentation and grading final exams.  Nonetheless, I am certain that my elementary aged nieces, Princess DeLia, Princess AzureDee, and Princess Khellie would have understood that Van Jones’ presentation simply guided viewers into taking action to create a better America without a whole lot of jargons, statistics yet with a simple set of facts and realities.  By the way, if you missed the premier of Rebuild the Dream simply visit http://www.rebuildthedream.com/launch to witness what I along with countless others witnessed.

I have observed and suspect that many of us in the marketplace are taking purposeful actions that create win-win situations similar to those exemplified in the Rebuild the Dream movement.  Likewise, there are other individuals who are overwhelmed with the realities presented last night by Van Jones.  There are countless business owners and professionals that are stuck, embarrassed, sad and perhaps thinking about early retirement from their passions and dreams however I charge you to reconsider before packing up and saying goodbye to those passions and dreams.

Recently I had a marketing expert and a business coach compliment me on my website and blog which made my heart sing.  I almost got up from my chair to do a victory dance for this was a truly big deal.  Even though I dreamed of a really cool engaging resource-rich insightful move-to-action website I was stuck in manifesting it into existence.  I could certainly justify the delayed re-launching of my website by telling you that I tried three (3) times to outsource the task but to no avail; however that would be taking the easy way out.

The truth is that (after looking closely in the mirror) I experienced battlefield wounds from shifting economies in the State of Michigan which begin post-911 continuing through now which took a toll on my spiritual, emotional, intellectual, physical and financial capital consequently delaying my manifestations of actions.  For example, the creation of a fresh website, new blog and design and delivery to the marketplace business tools for my fellow business comrades was delayed for almost a year.  The amazing part is although I was wounded one could not see it for I truly looked and look the part of a successful passionate professional and business owner.   Also, I can admit that I was declaring early retirement from business earlier this year until help came unexpectedly yet divinely scheduled arrive as I was helping another peer.

For the last three (3) years I open up my schedule and connect personally with about 10 people, to offer my help, to understand exactly what obstacles they’re trying to push through, and then work with them one-on-one to help them get over the place I call “freeze tag you are it” whereby you are stuck.

I’m not a miracle worker on the other hand I have verifiable experience in every aspect of business ranging from launch, expansion, acquisition to sale.  I do a really good job of helping people put the right plan in place and accelerate and manifest their progress.  I also become a valuable long-term resource because we develop genuine and fulfilling relationships together.  I love doing this for I get to right my name in countless success stories that I can share with my nieces, nephews, grandchildren and future generations.

First understand that a compliance review is a step in the right direction with regards to securing a government contract.  The purpose of a compliance review is to determine whether the contractor is maintaining nondiscriminatory hiring and employment practices. (Mondy, 2012)  The review will also allow the government agency to “kick the tires” in other words validate that your business is legitimate and capable of performing to the contractual terms.

Here are a few steps to prepare and ultimately achieve a successful review.

1. Carefully review the correspondent sent by the government agency to determine what exactly (meaning which core functions and business processes) will be reviewed during the site visit.

2. Carefully review the correspondent sent by the government agency to determine when the review will take place. It is imperative that your company has established time to fully participate as requested by the government agency and that you have identified internal and external resources (e.g. additional experts, capital, physical space, etc.) needed to ensure a smooth Pre-Award compliance review.

3.  Retrieve your winning bid submission and carefully examine your operational capabilities (e.g. human capital, technology, processes including reporting, finances, etc.) and to determine if there is additional planning, policy creation, employee or function development, redesigning and/or designing of business processes,  upgrades, etc. to successfully perform the contract terms.

4. Be brutally honest about requiring help or additional resources and do not wait until the midnight hour to ask for help!

5. Examine the company’s workforce plan and management strategies to determine if your plan reflects incorporation of qualified applicants from the community in which you do business. Typically this information is stored in an Affirmative Action Program (AAP).  The program ensures that the contractor is utilizing affirmative action to guarantee that applicants are employed, placed, trained, upgraded, promoted, terminated, and otherwise treated fairly without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, veteran status, or disability during employment. (Mondy, 2012)

6.  Examine the human resource management function (all aspects of the function: Recruitment & Staffing, Training & Development, Compensation & Benefits, Employee & Labor Relations, HR Information System, Safety and Health, policies, practices, etc.) to ensure non-discriminatory practices and efficient services delivery.  Ensure that your on-boarding of new employees include the E-Verify step to check for legal status as required by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (Learn more by visiting http://www.uscis.gov/and clicking on E-Verify Home page to the right side of the page).

Recently CNBC presented an inside view of Target Stores from inception to expansion activities.  I was surprised to learn that Target Stores acquired the City of Detroit’s J.L. Hudson Downtown store which I hold such fond memories of shopping there with my mom and siblings.   I remember a shopping trip to J.L. Hudson which I pleaded (really pleaded including a few tears) with my mom to buy me this navy blue  sailor dress which I was blessed to get and looked fabulous wearing (even at the age of 10)….thanks mommy!

Target Stores started with the drive and courage of an entrepreneur who saw an opportunity to provide goods and services.  With the help of countless individuals this Midwestern business grew rapidly through market expansion activities such as market penetrations and mergers and acquisitions.  Although, in the 70s Target Stores realized rapid growth and profit unfortunately in the same time period there were significant losses due to inconsistent management practices. (CNBC, Target: Inside the Bullseye, www.insidetarget.cnbc.com).  Undoubtedly, Target Stores did not find their losses to complimentary of their business strategies so internal changes were made including revamping practices and replacement of leadership.

Inconsistent business management practices across multiple sites or departments can result loss in profits.  Business management practices that are uniformed, consistent and measured are necessary in all sized enterprises if indeed profitability is desired.

We are bombarded by media reports of global economic conditions however  there seems to be a void or partial delivery of information in these reports.  I  find these economic reports (broadcasted through countless mediums) are simply absent of the voices of individuals who transact in commerce daily which includes the consumers and producers.  I find these economic reports fail to offer any solutions for turning around the business and economic  climates.  I find that these reports are totally absent of the testimonials of Christian business owners who are excelling in business in light of the economic conditions.

The Wall Street Journal (June 8, 2011) reports a story regarding the inabilities of the US Federal Reserve to stimulate jobs (Fed Lacks Tools to Ramp Up Job Growth, 2011).  I must admit as long as we lean unto our own understanding we will indeed be limited in our abilities and capabilities to perform.  I find that global economic reports lack any references to biblical events that mirror our economic conditions (albeit there is reference to historical economic data) or worst and the victories that were manifested using divinely inspired practices and principles.

I plan to deliver in this blog setting biblical practices and principles  aligned to best business practices so that our views and conversations will  shift and our business climates will ultimately transform in how we operate,  manage and grow our businesses.  I endeavor to change the conversations to  conversations that mirror victories and trust you will shift your conversations with me.
